Mergers and Acquisitions
Companies can merge or acquire other businesses as dictated by corporate strategy - to absorb competition or allow company to grow within a given industry avoiding need to create new business entities.
An acquisition, takeover or buyout may be friendly or hostile. Companies may cooperate in negotiations or may be unwilling to be bought or unaware of impending offer. Even if aware of intentions the approach may be regarded as hostile.
Would be acquisitor may build a stake in shares to become majority share holder. Smaller company can aquire larger company assets in reverse takeover. A reverse merger allows a private company to get publicly listed in a short time period normally using a shell company - one with no business and limited assets.
