Institutional, market-maker and dealer to dealer trading can take place prior to market opening - known as "pre-market trading" normally conducted effectively by the representatives of banks, brokers and without regulation of normal stock exchange control. Participation in pre-market trading is normally through the ECN - Electronic Communications Network there is normally less liquidity than during normal hours of trading.
