Definition: Shares Stop Loss
Stockmarket traders use shares stop-loss systems to protect profit. Because of the volatilty and uncertainty in stock markets a method is adopted in which a predetermined strategy forces the sale of stock to guard against total loss.
Often operating as a trailing stop loss (the stop loss level moves up with the share price) levels are preset with buying and selling within automated systems - available equally to professional traders or private investor online dealing platforms.
Typically, shares stop-losses are used to protect long positions where a trader may place a stop-loss for 10% or 15% below the current price and the trailing stop moves up automatically with a rise in share price but does not decrease with a drop in price.
